Protect University Data
University data should be protected at all times. This data could be student records, financial data, research data, intellectual property, medical record, or personal identifiable information (birthday, Medicare, address, etc.). Our aim is to avoid identity theft and to protect privacy. Unauthorised access to sensitive data can cause harm to students, staff and reputation of the University, so it is everyone’s responsibility to ensure that the University’s data is protected.
We recommend that:
- You avoid storing any confidential data or personal details on a portable USB thumb or external hard drives
- Laptops and mobile devices that store sensitive data should be protected with encryption and password
- Physically lock up your laptop and never leave your portable devices (tablet, phone) unattended
- Both staff and students should store UNSW Work-related files into their own assigned UNSW network home drive
- Avoid storing sensitive information in the cloud service (For example, iCloud, Dropbox, Google Drive, Skydrive, etc.)
- Protect your data by encrypting it first before uploading it into the cloud
- You use AARnet’s CloudStore, for sharing large file and LTRDS storing research data
- Avoid storing private information into public or shared computers
- Use the University VPN service when accessing sensitive data over a public Wi-Fi.
