Labs & Spaces

UNSW Arts and Social Sciences has a range of facilities for academic teaching, learning and research. These include seminar rooms, language labs, lecture theatres, meeting rooms, film viewing rooms, computer labs, production studios and edit suites.

Seminar and lecture spaces

Our seminar and lecture spaces feature up to date presentation environments reflecting the teaching conducted in each space. Most spaces can accomodate a range of uses including dance and movement, music performance, film screenings as well as lecture and seminar teaching.

Conference and meeting spaces

We have a variety of conference and meeting spaces in the three buildings which make up the faculty. These rooms are equipped with either a Mac or a Windows PC, plus a projector or LCD TV. Spaces can be booked for meetings using MS Outlook and then the Calendar to "invite" a room to your meeting, as it were. You will be able to search for and view all bookable meeting rooms in UNSW this way. If you need assistance getting started with this please contact the IT Service Centre.

Software in labs

At the beginning of each calendar year we undertake hardware and software refreshes in our labs. Hardware replacement cycles often depend on the life-span warranty of the machine. Common software that is funded by UNSW IT, software such as Microsoft Office, Endnote, SPSS, SAV (we refer to this as our Base Image) will be automatically updated to a newer version as it become available.

Our computer operating environments are based on Mac OS 10.9 and Microsoft Windows 7 operating systems. They also include many other software titles depending on the purpose and usage of the lab.

See available software that’s installed in the labs and some software has been flagged for an upgrade.

You will notice from the list, we have a base image for both Mac and Windows and it’s made up of a Base Operating system (Mac OS X or Microsoft Windows 7), Security Software, software such as MS Office and Desktop Customization and configuration.

When new software is requested, you will be required to participate in testing to ensure that all of the functionality of the software required for your course actually works. Usually we carry out testing around early February. We highly recommended that you designate a tester to ensure it’s ready before classes commence.

Each of the labs and spaces in the faculty are designed to be used by specific school groups, though we understand some do overlap.
