Booking procedure for sound studios
The sound studios are located in the Robert Webster Building, rooms 311a and G15. They are are loaned and managed by the TRC. Use of the sound studios is restricted to students enrolled in a course that has prepared them for using a studio (knowledge of Pro Tools, microphones, speakers etc) e.g. MUSC2332 Electronic Music or SOMA3615. Students will require proficiency to use the room. Either tutors or TRC staff can grant proficiency. Course convenors should forward proficiency lists to the TRC loans officer.
Unlike other TRC loan equipment, the sound studios cannot be booked online. Students wishing to use the studios will need to fill in a “Sound Studio Request Form” available from the TRC office. The form includes:
- A brief description of the project (e.g. recording a three piece band drums/bass/vocals)
- Required session times. (Multiple bookings may be made at this time and ad hoc bookings may be made [during loan hours] once the project is under way.)
- The names of any studio guests.
- Tutor’s signature unless accompanied by an email. (The tutor may inform the TRC of multiple students who will require a studio for their project in a single email.)
An initial meeting will be organised to discuss the project. Any special requirements, such as specialised microphones, recording spaces and after-hours access will be discussed at this meeting. This meeting may include a studio visit if it involves a complex activity the student is not familiar with. If students have not had proficiency granted as part of their course this visit must include a studio induction to ensure knowledge of proper use of the room.
The room will then be booked along with any additional equipment or recording spaces such as G13 or G17. Security will be informed by TRC via email of any after hours access. The swipe key and additional equipment will be loaned and returned by the student per session as with other TRC loans equipment. Students will be issued with a checklist when they collect the swipe card to be filled in before and after using the room and submitted when returning the card. Any issues with the rooms are to be reported to the IT Service Centre via the phone in the studio on phone extension 51333.
