Configuring Basic Weightings in the Moodle Gradebook
About This Document
This document depicts a very basic configuration of the Moodle Gradebook. The example will use 3 assessments, and will demonstrate how to configure the Gradebook weightings to properly yield the correct value for Course Total. For assistance with more complex configurations, please contact m.bogle@unsw.edu.au
Sample Assessments
In this example we will use the following assessments and weightings:
- Literature Review: 25%
- Final Essay: 50%
- In-class Presentation: 25%
Assessment Point Values
When creating assessment activities, it’s best to set the point values at 100. This enables professional/technical staff to more easily identify any calculation errors when transcribing the final marks into ECCLES.
Configuring Weightings
Once the activities have been created:
- Go to the Gradebook (via Settings > Course Administration > Grades);
- Click on the Setup tab;
- Next, click Edit in the top row of the table (corresponding to your course code/name) and choose Edit Settings;
- On the following page, set Aggregation as “Weighted mean of grades” and click Save changes;
- After the screen has refreshed, you should see a Weights column displayed. Enter the weightings in the field corresponding to each grade item (activity). In our example, the weightings would be 25.0, 50.0 and 25.0 respectively.
- Click Save changes when finished.
At this point the weightings have been configured, and our Setup page looks as shown in the following image. All that remains to do is mark the assessments in their respective areas. Marks will be automatically passed to the Gradebook, where Moodle will factor in the weightings based on your configuration.
