Managing your disk space and saving data

** Please remember to back up regularly **

There are a couple of storage options available to students. The below link outlines the available options and their features to help you select the most suitable option for your needs.

https://www.myit.unsw.edu.au/services/students/storage-students (NOTE : This does NOT cover the Student Network Home Folder option)

Student Network Home Folder

Your Student Network Home folder is available to access from any UNSW lab computer. All students are allocated 5GB of disk space for their network folder. This space is intended for storing documents not media (photos, video and/or audio files) or large files.

What happens when my quota is reached?

When 90% of this quota is used an e-mail is sent to the UNSW student e-mail account. When 100% of the quota is reached you will not be able to save anything to your home folder and possibly won’t be able to open any applications.

How to manage my quota?

There are several things you can do to make sure you do not reach your quota limit; Keep an eye on your folder size, delete files you don’t need, archive-off files you are not using any more and empty the trash. To see your student folder size, open the Student network drive and the space available to you is written at the bottom of the window. If it’s not showing, click on view and select Show Status Bar.

Your local data (Lab computers)

By default all your work is saved locally to the computer and is not accessible from any other computer in the lab, nor will it be backed up. It is your responsibility to make sure data is backed up regularly to a portable drive and/or a cloud service such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive.

Prior to logging off, it is highly recommended to ensure you have backed up your work to a portable drive, a cloud service such as OneDrive, Dropbox, Google Drive and/or your Student network folder.

NOTE : If you do not log on the same computer within 2 weeks, the local data is wiped from computer automatically.

AARNet CloudStor

All new users from UNSW will have a default storage quota of 1 TB.

Microsoft OneDrive

All active students have access to 5TB cloud storage via Microsoft OneDrive.

USB/Flash Drives

  • Please try to avoid using USB flash drives as they are easily lost and valuable/sensitive information could fall into the wrong hands.

  • Avoid putting someone else’s USB drive into your computer. It may infect your computer with malware.

  • If you find a USB drive in any public place, please contact UNSW Security https://student.unsw.edu.au/security
