Working with Moodle books
Editing a book chapter
- Login to Moodle and enter the course site
- Ensure the Turn Editing On button has been clicked
- Load the book by clicking on its web-link
- Inside the book, click on the notepad icon to the right of the chapter title. This will load the text editor
- Make your desired changes in the text editor
- Click Save Changes when finished
Attaching files to a book
Downloadable materials can be provided through books by attaching the file in the edit view.
- Follow steps 1 to 4 in the Editing a Book Chapter section above to enter edit mode for a book chapter
- Once in the text editor, enter the text you wish students to click on
- After entering the text, highlight it and click on the chain link icon in the toolbar options. Note: A word or phrase needs to be highlighted before the chain link icon is clickable
- In the pop-up, click on the Browse Icon to the right of the Link URL text field
- The following pop-up will load the File picker. To upload a new file select “Upload a file” from the left panel, click Browse and locate the file on your local computer, and then click Upload this file
- You will then be returned to the Insert/edit link pop-up. Click Insert to add the link to your text
- Save changes to finalise the process
Adding web-links to a book
The process for adding web-links to a Book chapter is nearly identical to that of uploading files, albeit slightly shorter.
- Follow steps 1 to 4 in the Editing a Book Chapter section above to enter edit mode for a book chapter
- Once in the text editor, enter the text you wish students to click on
- After entering the text, highlight it and click on the chain link icon in the toolbar options. Note: A word or phrase needs to be highlighted before the chain link icon is clickable
- In the Insert/Edit Link pop-up, enter or paste in the URL to the weblink in the Link URL text field. Note: When linking to external websites outside of Moodle be sure to set Target to Open in new window (_blank). Also, for the benefit of screen reading programs (accessibility), be sure to include a short description of the website in the Title field
- Finally, click Insert to create the link and then Save changes
